Hornets fall to Boonville in NCMC opener

Fulton committed three errors and gave up 10 stolen bases to Boonville as the Hornets dropped their North Central Missouri Conference opener to the Pirates 7-4 on Wednesday night at the high school athletic complex.

The loss was the second in a row for the Hornets (2-2), who finished with just five hits. Boonville bolted to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Fulton battled back with two runs in its half of the inning.

The Hornets then tacked on single runs in the second and third to take a 4-3 lead, but the Pirates erupted for three more runs in the fourth to go in front to stay and tallied an additional run in the seventh. Boonville prevailed despite collecting only four hits.

BOONVILLE - Sophomore Gage Oestreich carded a 38 in Wednesday's season opener to spur the Hornets to a seven-stroke triumph over the North Central Missouri Conference foe Pirates at Hail Ridge Golf Course.

Oestreich finished just a shot behind Boonville's Brett Windsor for medalist honors.

SAUGET, Ill. - Senior first baseman Matt Thomas delivered a two-run single to highlight a five-run outburst in the top of the fifth inning Wednesday as the Owls overpowered the Lynx.

William Woods University senior starter Bubba Bradshaw remained unbeaten at 3-0 by yielding an earned run on just five hits over seven innings. Bradshaw struck out seven and issued only one walk.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Lady Owls avoided a no-hitter when junior first baseman Kacey Scharnhorst singled with one out in the top of the seventh inning in Wednesday's loss to the ninth-ranked Lady Crusaders.

sweep tournament championships

CAPE GIRARDEAU - The fifth-ranked Lady Owls and sixth-ranked Owls locked up their fifth and second victories of the season, respectively, by claiming the titles of the Lindenwood University-Belleville Spring Invitational on Tuesday.

Sophomore Myriam Hassan captured the women's individual championship with a 9-over par, two-day 153 total (74-79) and directed the William Woods University women to a first-place finish with a 633 score (319-314). John A. Logan Community College was a distant second with a 712.

On the men's side, freshmen Billy McKenzie (72-73) and David Houlding (73-72) both ended up 1-over par with a pair of 145s to share the individual title. William Woods secured first place with a 588 (292-296), while McKendree (Ill.) University followed in second with a 624.
