Top-ranked Hermann stuns No. 9 Ladybirds at buzzer

— HERMANN — “A tough pill to swallow.”

That’s how North Callaway Ladybirds head coach Matt Miller described losing on a last-second shot from midcourt and it’s hard to argue with the sentiment.

Hermann senior guard Karinne Lane sunk a desperation heave from 30 feet away as time expired, shocking the state-ranked Ladybirds as the top-ranked Lady Bearcats escaped with a 59-56 victory Thursday night.

“…That’ll rip your heart out,” Miller added. “Especially when you compete hard in such a well-played game.”

Junior guard Ricky Dawson responded with a game-high 27 points as the Hornets bowed to the Owls in North Cenrtal Missouri Conference play on Wednesday night at Roger D. Davis Gymnasium.

Dawson — coming off a 30-point game in Fulton’s 67-58 win over St. Joseph Benton in the US Bank/Rolla High School Holiday Tournament on Dec. 28 — connected on 7-of-15 shots Wednesday night.

“He’s just being more aggressive offensively and playing to his ability,” Hornets head coach Ryan Shaw said. “… He’s capable of attacking. … I think the key for us is to follow his lead and play up to his level.”
