South Callaway boys top Harrisburg to stay perfect

Senior guard Troy Hentges responded with a game-high 24 points to help keep South Callaway unbeaten in Thursday night's 80-70 non-conference clash between Bulldogs.

South Callaway carried a 39-33 edge into halftime and outscored Harrisburg 41-37 in the second half to log the 10-point triumph. Hentges - who also collected a team-high 11 rebounds - topped three double-figure scorers for South Callaway.

Senior forward Jacob Smith tallied 22 points and senior guard Terry Miles had 13. Smith and fellow senior forward Luke Horstman also grabbed nine and eight rebounds, respectively.

"We really needed this game tonight," South Callaway head coach Tony Brandt said. "Harrisburg is tough each and every year, and really came to play. It was good to see our kids close out a close game down the stretch.

"It will be a good experience for us as we come back from Christmas break. We hit some really big shots in the fourth quarter (five 3-pointers) to keep the lead and pull away."

Bryan Bolton answered with 18 points to direct four players in double figures for Harrisburg (2-4), which has lost three in a row. Drew Ewens added 13 points and JP Canote and Brendan Gray both provided 12.

In the junior varsity contest, freshman guard Kaden Helsel put up a game-high 27 points as South Callaway (6-0) pulled out a narrow 56-55 victory. Sophomore guard Brandon Ashley contributed 13 points.

South Callaway squared off against Crocker in a non-conference encounter Saturday at Drury University in Springfield. Results were not available at press time.
