Four Bulldogs earn spots on media all-state football team

South Callaway's Rulo chosen Class 2 coach of year

South Callaway senior Cory Hanger and junior Dillon Stone were both first-team picks in Class 2 on the media's 2014 all-state football teams announced this past week.

Hanger - who was a slot receiver for the Bulldogs - was selected on offense at running back, while Stone was chosen on defense at linebacker. Both players were also first-team picks on the Missouri Football Coaches Association all-state teams, with Hanger being named Class 2 offensive player of the year.

Meanwhile, South Callaway's Tim Rulo was the media's choice as Class 2 coach of the year after he led the Bulldogs to the state championship game for the first time in the program's history. South Callaway lost to now four-time state champion Lamar 30-15 in the Class 2 title game.

Two other Bulldogs - senior quarterback Troy Hentges and senior defensive lineman Luke Horstman - were also second-team all-state selections by the media. Hentges and Horstman were both second-team choices on the coaches' all-state teams.

The 5-foot-10, 160-pound Hanger topped South Callaway in rushing this season with 1,097 yards (10.5 average) and 19 touchdowns. He also had 21 catches for 561 yards (26.7 average) and 10 scores, both team highs.

Stone (5-10, 225) led the Bulldogs with 80 tackles (28.5 for loss) and seven sacks. He logged four fumble recoveries and an interception.

Hentges (6-0, 180) completed 84-of-132 passes (64 percent) on the season for 1,574 yards, 28 touchdowns and only seven interceptions. He was third on the team in rushing with 717 yards (7.9 average) and 19 scores.

Horstman (6-2, 205) totalled 56 tackles (17.5 for loss), 2.5 sacks and recovered a fumble.

South Callaway finished with a 14-1 record in its seventh season under Rulo, who is 66-19 overall at the school. He took the Bulldogs to the Eastern Missouri Conference championship in their first year as a conference member.

Rulo was also named the Central Missouri media's Class 2 district coach of the year.
