No. 1 Freed-Hardeman halts Lady Owls' win streak at seven

The William Woods University Lady Owls' seven-game winning streak came to an abrupt end Tuesday night when they suffered their first AMC loss to the No. 1-ranked Freed-Hardeman (Tennessee) University Lady Lions 91-58 at Anderson Arena.

William Woods was only down 36-25 at halftime, but Freed-Hardeman turned the game into a runaway by shooting 58 percent (23-of-40) in the second half. The Lady Owls slipped to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the American Midwest Conference, while the Lady Lions are 10-1 on the season and 5-0 in conference play.

Freed-Hardeman controlled the interior, outscoring William Woods by a decisive 48-22 in the paint. The Lady Lions also produced 20 points off 16 turnovers by the Lady Owls, and outscored them 15-4 on second-chance points.

Senior guard Blake French - connecting on 6-of-11 shots - posted 15 points to pace William Woods, which shot 40 percent (20-of-50) as a team. Junior forward Nia Lateju added 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting and sophomore center Kennedy Volkart collected a team-high six rebounds as the Lady Owls were dominated on the boards by a 42-31 margin.

Grace Alonso de Armino tallied her game-high 25 points on an 11-of-16 shooting performance to guide Freed-Hardeman, which shot 51 percent (39-of-77) for the game and had just six turnovers. Hayley Newby almost equalled de Armino's output, delivering 23 points while knocking down 11-of-19 shots.

Kenley Crowell rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Lady Lions with 13 points.

William Woods will meet its second straight ranked opponent when it squares off against No. 23 Lyon (Arkansas) College in an AMC encounter at Anderson Arena at 5:30 p.m. today.
