Transportation Safety Board: Fulton plane crash caused by engine failure

The National Transportation Safety Board has completed its preliminary report on a Nov. 17 plane crash at Fulton's Hensley Memorial Airport.

According to the report, a Cessna 401A multi-engine airplane - registered to and operated by Heartland Air, LLC out of Mablevale, Arkansas - was "substantially damaged" when it crashed following a loss of engine power during takeoff. Both pilots and a passenger sustained serious injuries.

The report states that one of the pilots told emergency responders that he lost engine power immediately after takeoff and that he aborted the takeoff.

"When the pilot saw he would not be able to stop on the runway, he shut down the opposite engine," the report states. "The airplane exited the end of the runway surface, impacted rough terrain and came to rest upright."

Although at least one fuel tank was breached, there was no post-impact fire.

A final report on the accident has not yet been released.
