Hentges, Bulldogs blister Montgomery County

MOKANE - Senior guard Troy Hentges directed the unbeaten South Callaway Bulldogs with 21 points as they dismantled the Montgomery County Wildcats 89-57 in Tuesday night's non-conference romp.

South Callaway (3-0) carried a 48-35 advantage into halftime, but turned the contest into a runaway by outscoring Montgomery County 41-22 in the second half.

"We still have several things to fix defensively, but our effort and ability to score in bunches has carried us so far," Bulldogs head coach Tony Brandt said. "We have to continue to work on the things that it will take to make a postseason run and get better at those (in) each game.

"This is a fun group of kids to coach and as long as they stay bought into the team concept, we can be tough to beat."

Hentges was one of four players to finish in double figures for South Callaway. Junior guard Logan Taylor provided 18 points, senior guard Dax Helsel registered 12 and senior forward Harold Woods had 10.

Senior forward Jacob Smith also pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs, while senior guard Cory Hanger passed out five assists.

"The strength of this team is our depth and ability to have multiple guys score," Brandt said. "We've had several guys step up this year and contribute in our first three games.

"The boys are hungry for minutes and are playing hard when they get their chance."

Kyle Kroll paced Montgomery County with 21 points and Chase Parrish followed with 18.

Led by freshman guard Kaden Helsel's 24 points, South Callaway (3-0) pulled out a 58-53 triumph in the junior varsity game. Sophomore guard Blake Parker chipped in with 16 points.

The Bulldogs play a tripleheader at Show-Me Conference opponent New Bloomfield on Friday, starting with a two-quarter freshman game at 5:30 p.m.
