Westminster women top Webster in SLIAC opener

Junior point guard Mackenzie Haddox's 17 points spurred the host Lady Blue Jays past the Lady Gorlok 79-70 in their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener Wednesday night.

Haddox was 5-of-11 from the field and converted all seven of her free-throw attempts.

Westminster College (2-2) - which stopped a two-game losing streak - led 37-24 at halftime and pushed that advantage to as many as 14 points in the second half.

Junior guard Sadie Theroff also provided 16 points for the Lady Blue Jays, hitting on 4-of-8 attempts from 3-point range and 4-of-4 free throws. Sophomore guard Andrea Zalis added 14 points and collected a team-high eight rebounds to help carry Westminster to a 44-38 advantage on the boards.

The Lady Blue Jays shot 41 percent (26-of-64) from the field, 91 percent (19-0f-21) from the foul line and committed 17 turnovers.

Brittany Harris-Conway led all players with 29 points and 10 rebounds for Webster (4-3, 1-1), which shot 44 percent (30-of-68) as a team and had 16 turnovers. Cassie Endicott contributed 22 points.

Westminster continues SLIAC play at Greenville (Illinois) College at 1 p.m. Saturday.
