Lady Bulldogs, Lady Wildcats claim district softball titles

South Callaway, New Bloomfield to host Class 2 sectional games Wednesday

CUBA - South Callaway senior starter Abby Bartley helped make sure the Lady Bulldogs softball team would be returning to the state playoffs.

Bartley threw a three-hitter and supplied some offense to back her cause, coming up with three hits and driving in three runs Friday night as top-seeded South Callaway secured the Class 2, District 9 championship with an 8-1 victory over No. 2 Cuba.

The Lady Bulldogs (21-4) captured their second straight district title and will host Jefferson (Festus) (10-10) in a Class 2 sectional game at Mokane on Wednesday. Game time has not been determined. South Callaway advanced to the state playoffs in 2012 for the first time in school history, reaching the Class 2 quarterfinals before bowing out in a 2-1 loss to Palmyra.

RUSSELLVILLE - The third-seeded Lady Wildcats produced all three of their runs in the third inning Saturday, completing their surprising title run by knocking off the top-seeded Lady Comets in the Class 2, District 13 championship.

New Bloomfield (13-12) - which also toppled No. 2 seed Russellville 11-1 in Thursday night's semifinals - won its first district title since 1997. The Lady Wildcats also avenged a 15-0 Show-Me Conference loss to Fatima during the regular season.

New Bloomfield will now host a Class 2 sectional game Wednesday night against the winner of Saturday's District 14 championship between Lafayette County and Carrollton. Game time for Wednesday's sectional contest has not been decided.
