County to build new road maintenance facility

The Callaway County Commission is scheduled to open bids Wednesday on a new 5,280 square-foot maintenance building for county's Road and Bridge Department.

Callaway County Western District Commissioner Doc Kritzer said the new six-bay maintenance building will be a free-standing structure near the Road and Bridge Department's maintenance facility at 5901 County Road 302 in Fulton. The county is seeking competitive bids on the 44-foot by 120-foot building, which is estimated to cost about $175,000.

"There has been a growing need for additional maintenance space at the Road and Bridge Department for several years," Kritzer said.

Kritzer said the commission decided to close its Road and Bridge Department maintenance facility in New Bloomfield and consolidate offices in Fulton.

Kritzer said the county's storage building in New Bloomfield no longer meets the county's needs. Members of the commission looked at the now closed Missouri Department of Transportation maintenance building in New Bloomfield but decided against trying to buy it after MoDOT closed the office in 2011.
