Special Olympics training campus planned in Columbia

COLUMBIA - According to Missouri head football coach Gary Pinkel, the success of the University of Missouri football program in recent years has much to do with the availability of the Mizzou Athletic Training Complex and the hours his players are able to spend there.

Thursday morning, Pinkel was part of the announcement that Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) hopes to build such a facility in Columbia for its more than 15,000 athletes. Pinkel was named an honorary chairman for the Training For Life Campus campaign as he helped kick off the fundraising drive for the $7.5 million project.

"This no doubt will greatly benefit the athletes. They deserve this opportunity, and I'm really pleased to see this come together for them," Pinkel said after noting the role the university's complex has played for his program. "I look forward to assisting in any way I can."
