Former Fulton union leader indicted for bank fraud

A former president of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1324 in Fulton recently was indicted in federal court on 14 counts of bank fraud.

Michael Allen Palmer, 51, is charged with writing checks out of the AFSCME Local 1324’s Callaway Bank checking account for personal use multiple times between 2007 and 2009 during his term as president. AFSCME Local 1324 has a membership of employees who work at Fulton State Hospital.

Thanks for covering this story. Now before the anti-union drones copy and paste talking points from Glenn Beck, let me shed some light on some important facts. The local union officers had a choice to make when they became aware of Palmer's fraud. They could cover it up or report it to the proper authorities. To their credit and despite what many people in the community thought, they immediately reported the incidents to local and federal authorities. Unfortunately, the legal process moves a little slower for white-collar crimes than it does for assault or murder. However, because of the dedication and perseverance of the local union leadership who promptly reported this, justice is now being served.

Before the personal smears fly in, let me say that I am not nor have I ever been an officer with this local union and can therefore provide some additional objective facts. I know the officers who took care of this, and I think they deserve a lot of credit for their honesty and diligence in dealing with a corrupt individual who's actions give many a bad name.

To all who will read this, please try to avoid the spin that many in the media spew about unions. It's true that there are many corrupt people and organizations. It's also true that there have been cover-ups of similar incidents in other unions and of more severity in many big corporations. Despite all that, these honest people did the right thing. That should be noted, and they deserve some credit for doing the right thing even when it could have given their organization a bad name.

It's ok, I wasn't expecting you to be able to resist the neo-conservative spin. I like the civilized debates we had months ago, but now it's just like talking to all the other right-wing drones. Learn to think objectively and for yourself. Life is not black and white and there is certainly more than one side to every story.

"big corporation corruption" revealed 5,440,000 Google search hits. What does that prove? Nothing. Research entails a bit more than your closest internet search engine.

"rock 1853 idi0t" oddly enough = 1,860,000 results on google! you see the words are also searched individually, your search about union corruption searched for both words union and corruption, so it returned higher results, way to go, you proved nothing.

Funny how you always have to use labels and generalizations to make yourself feel ligit. Always on the defensive. Of course big corp will have more hits, you prefer small corps, no corp?

You are so defensive. Did you not see the fact that I was with tongue in cheek? So. Let's throw out Glenn Beck and neo-con. Why not 90% of Americans? Google 417k is spin? Right wing drones? Seriously? pfft.

You are in the minority, accept it. Now go get a real job and prove yourself. Don't expect the "union" to "make it all work out". Take responsibilty for yourself. It really isn't that hard. Now you can proceed in the name calling and degredation. I speak facts, for your sake.
