North Callaway junior Gary Wathen qualified for the state golf tournament by shooting an 83 during Wednesday’s Class 2, Sectional 2 championships at Tanglewood Golf Course in Fulton.

Wathen, who finished in a seven-way tie for eighth place, advanced to the state championships for the first time. The Class 2 tournament is set for May 16-17 at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield.

“I know Gary was really excited (about qualifying),” North Callaway head coach Jason Smith said. “It’s something that he’s been asking me about the entire year.
