It may not happen this weekend, but sometime in the near future the North Callaway FFA has a date with area senior citizens.
The group’s Senior Citizen Prom -- originally scheduled for Saturday night at Auxvasse Elementary -- has been postponed due to weather and road conditions, but members said they are looking forward to an evening of learning from their elders soon.
“I just like being out there and getting to know the older crowd in our community,” said junior Devan Wilkerson, FFA sentinel. “I just look forward to seeing everybody have a good time.”
President Megan Montgomery, a senior, said she also is excited to get together with her older dance partners.
“I like getting to talk with them, it’s always neat,” Montgomery said. “They teach us a lot of old-time dances like the waterfall dance, the two-step and ballroom dancing.
“It’s a really fun night for everybody.”
FFA advisor Katie Milholland said the purpose of the annual dance is to bring the two generations together and make the club more visible in the community.
“It’s good community service for the kids and it gets them out there,”Milholland said. “Our students end up having a great time, and so do the senior citizens.”
Wilkerson said that although some students may be tentative at first, they usually warm up by the end of the evening.
“I like seeing that no matter how the kids our age act like they’re not into it, once they get out there dancing, you see them have fun,” she said.
“We ask all the members to dance with at least three different people,” Montgomery added. “Most of the kids are nervous at first and then by the end they end up dancing with 14 people.”
She said the seniors in attendance always seem to enjoy interacting with the students as well.
“A lot of the people that come were in FFA, and it’s neat for them to come see how FFA has changed,” Montgomery said. “They get to talk to the kids and get to know them.”
Milholland said a reschedule date for the Senior Citizen Prom has not yet been selected. For updates to North Callaway FFA events, visit the group’s Web site at www.northcallawayffa.com.
