Hornets soccer team halts skid, blanks Hannibal

The Fulton Hornets soccer team broke a scoreless tie with two second-half goals Tuesday night in stopping a four-match losing streak with a 2-0 NCMC victory over Hannibal.

With the win, Fulton improved to 11-10 overall and 5-5 in the North Central Missouri Conference.

"We've been playing well, we just haven't been getting the results we wanted," said junior sweeper Morgan Milligan, who assisted on sophomore midfielder Brian McCarty's goal in the 6th minute of the second half to put the Hornets up 1-0. "We calmed down after a stern halftime talk from coach (Dave Milligan), and played more as a team.

"I thought we played well; we were composed and passed the ball really well."

Fulton clinched the victory when senior forward Dan McClure scored off an assist from junior forward Chad Davis with a minute left in the match.

Junior Nick Heimericks -- who played in goal to give McClure a night off -- picked up his second shutout of the season. The Hornets logged six shots on goal and had three corner kicks, while Hannibal was limited to four shots and didn't record any corner kicks.

"We did a really good job of containing (Hannibal)," said Morgan Milligan, who is one of the team's three captains. "They have some fast, dangerous forwards, but we didn't give them much time on the ball."

Fulton (7-0-2) played to a scoreless tie in the junior varsity match. Davis was credited with the shutout.

The Hornets play their final home match of the season against NCMC rival Moberly at 6 p.m. Thursday at Westminster College. The varsity will play first.
