She was the third of four children. She had an older sister, older brother and a younger brother. The above were born to Ray and Anabelle Thomas of Brentwood, Mo. Dorlas spent most of her first 18 years living in Brentwood and attended Brentwood elementary and high school. At the age of 18, her family moved to a farm they purchased in Lecoma, Mo. At the farm, Dorlas worked and met her future husband, Lewis Curtis. Dorlas and Lewis started dating in the fall of 1950 and were united in marriage on June 30, 1951. After their marriage, they moved to St. Louis, Mo. where they worked until 1953. Shortly after, Dorlas and Lewis entered ministry and served many churches in Missouri. Dorlas was a real blessing to people in the churches where she served. Together, they attended Hannibal LaGrange College in Hannibal, Mo. After graduation from HLG in 1955, Dorlas taught school at Wentzville, Mo. Dorlas also taught school at head start and other places in need.
