Jean Yantis Smith, 93, of Williamsburg, Mo, died peacefully at home on November 20, 2023.
She was born in 1930, to the late Philip Montague Smith II and the late Margaret Yantis Robnett.
Jean attended William Woods University and the University of Missouri. She taught physical education at MU for 30 years, where she was part of the Title IX committee that created access for women in athletics. Jean was a beloved elder of the Williamsburg community, where she continued farming and working with horses for the remainder of her long, full life. She showed us what it means to live a life of integrity and autonomy, to love all creatures great and small, and to be a steward of the land.
She is survived by her nieces Ellen Koehler, Sharlyn Swenson, and Barbara Jean Smith, as well as seven great-nieces and -nephews and many more great-greats.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Philip Montague Smith III; sister, Margaret Payne, and nephew, Robbie Payne.
A graveside service will be held on December 9, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery in Fulton, with Pastor Bill Jessop officiating.
