Walter SchubertSeptember 26th, 2021
Walter Schubert, 81, of Jefferson City, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at his home. He was born on February 1, 1940, in Oberstdorf, Germany, a son of the late Alexander and Elsa (Fiebich) Schubert. He was united in marriage on May 27, 1967 to Antoinette "Toni" Soteros, who survives of the home. Walter was a 1960 graduate of East St. Louis High School. He then went onto attend Southern Illinois University as well as banking school. Walter faithfully served his country in the United States Army Reserves from 1961 to 1967. He worked at Roosevelt Federal Savings and Loan from 1962 to 1968. He worked for North St. Louis Times and the City Bank of St. Louis. He and Toni then moved to Meta, where they became partners in ownership of Meta State Bank from 1970 to 1977. Walter continued to work for Meta State Bank, which became Mid-America Bank, for 10 more years. In November 1987, he purchased the United Security Bank of Auxvasse where he served as President and Chairman of the Board until present. He was on the Meta State Bank and Mid-America Bank Board of Directors from 1970 to 1998, the Fulton Area Development Corp., the Chamber of Commerce of Fulton, and a member of the Missouri Independent Bankers Association. Walter also served on the board of the Special Learning Center, was treasurer at St. John's Lutheran Church, and a member of the Auxvasse Lion's Club. Aside from all of his accomplishments with the bank, Walter's greatest achievement was his family. There was no place he would rather be than with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the great outdoors. Walter was known as the "candy man", always having a stash of candy in his pockets for his grandchildren or kids coming into the bank. On Saturday mornings, you could catch him delivering pancakes or donuts to his grandchildren, and now, great-grandchildren. Some of Walter's favorite places included his family farm in Meta, his "home away from home" in Florida, and his peaceful lake house. He was very proud of his family, and will be missed by them greatly. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years: Toni; son: Kurt Schubert (Katrinia) of Jefferson City; grandchildren: Tyler Schubert (Jenna), Makenzie Wolfe (Andrew), Austin Schubert (Kayla), and Elijah Sherwood; great-grandchildren: Liv, Declan, Lux and Daxton Schubert, and Dakota, Leo and Miles Wolfe; great-grandbaby number eight is due in October; and sister: Erika Schubert. He was preceded in death by his parents and mother-in-law: Isabella Soteros. Friends will be received from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, September 26, 2021, at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 27, 2021 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Schubert. Interment will be at Riverview Cemetery with full military honors. Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
