Opal Margaret McBride Vaughn Hughes, 93, of Fulton, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2021, at Kingdom Care Senior Living in Fulton, Missouri. Opal Margaret McBride Vaughn Hughes was born February 9, 1928 in Bluffton, Mo., the daughter of the late Rev. Albert and Leola Davis McBride. Opal married James (Jimmy) Henry Hughes on November 22, 1966. He preceded her in death. She graduated George Washington Carver Grade School in Fulton, Mo., then she attended Lincoln University Laboratory High School in Jefferson City, Mo. and graduated high school in Kansas City, Mo. Opal received her R.N. degree in St. Paul, Minnesota. She then traveled and lived in Holland and France. She would tease her family with her knowledge of the French language. Opal loved her family and friends and enjoyed doing the work of the Lord. Opal was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church in St. Louis, Mo. for over 50 years under the leadership of Pastors Rev. James Cook, Emeritus Pastor Rev. William Collins and the present Pastor, Rev. Dr. F. Delano R. Benson Jr. She was a member of the Gospel Choir, the WMU, Antioch District, and a life member of the Missouri Baptist Convention. She was also the Historian of the Antioch District. She was a member of the Corinthian Chapter #9 of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a Silver member of the NAACP and the National Council of Negro Women. When she was in Fulton she attended Calvary Baptist Church. Opal loved to help people. She was employed at Barnes Hospital and the City of St. Louis. Opal leaves to cherish her memory: two brothers (Jack) Virgil McBride of Fulton, Mo. and Dr. Charles McBride of Muskegon Heights, Mich.; one sister, Martha Rose Galbreath (Kenneth) of Fulton, Mo.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by five brothers, James McBride Sr., Leroy McBride, Durwood Sam McBride, Arnold Ray (Bake) McBride Sr. and Percy McBride; and two sisters, Pauline Page and Ruby Pemberton Bell. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at Callaway Christian Church in Fulton, MO. at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the Antioch Baptist Church or Calvary Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of HT May & Son Funeral Home.
