Russell Allen Whanger, 66, of Fulton, passed away at Fulton Medical Center on Sunday, February 7, 2021. He was born in Columbia, Missouri on March 5, 1954, to the late Russell Andrew Whanger and the late Hazel Gertrude (Simmons) Whanger. Russell made his living as a photographer, working at The Fulton Sun for some time. His passion was astronomy; he was even known to make his own telescopes. He also enjoyed carpentry, woodworking, mechanics, and his cats, Butterscotch and Misty. Russell was a talented musician and loved to play guitar. He could hear a song on the radio and instinctively knew how to play it. At times, Russell could seem a bit gruff but nothing softened him like his grandson, Quincy. He enjoyed talking about meteorology with his son-in-law and was supportive of his daughter and son-in-law's efforts to prevent child abuse misdiagnosis. Russell will be fondly remembered by his daughter, Sarah Culp (Zachary) of Cabot, Ark.; sisters, Brenda Shaon, and Sandra Whanger; and grandchild, Quincy Culp. Private services will be planned later when his family arranges to launch some of his cremated remains into space.
