Betty Margaret Hines Mallinckrodt Bates, 97, of Fulton, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, at Summit Villa. She was born on December 1, 1922 in Baldwin, Illinois to the late Reverend Elston M. Hines and the late Margaret L. (Heine) Hines. In December of 1945, Betty was united in marriage to Ted Mallinckrodt. The couple had three children, Margaret Ann Gergen (Michael), Stephen Hines Mallinckrodt (Pamela), and John David Mallinckrodt. Betty later married John E. Bates in October of 1979. He preceded her in death in 1993. Betty graduated from Bucklin, Missouri High School in 1940. She furthered her education at Northeast Missouri Teachers College, now known as Truman University, completing her degree in 1945. Betty made Fulton her permanent home in August of 1959. She taught at public schools in Missouri, Iowa, and Massachusetts for six years before teaching at Missouri School for the Deaf for 25 years until her retirement. Betty was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church, DY Chapter of P.E.O. Sisterhood, and Retired Teacher of Callaway County. Betty will be fondly remembered by her three children; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Reverend Elroy Hines (Marilyn); sister-in-law, Barbara Hines; several nieces and nephews; as well as her Bates family children, Rick, Ann Ross, and Kathy. In addition to her parents and husbands, Betty was preceded in death by siblings, C. Robert Hines, Howard Hines and LaVerne Smith. Always a teacher, Betty chose to donate her body so that others could continue to learn from her. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
