Dorothy May Craig, of Millersburg, passed away at the young age of 99, on August 27, 2020, at The Neighborhoods in Columbia with her family by her side. Dorothy was born in Boone County on May 22, 1921 to Roy and Sarah (Ashlock) Baumgartner. She married Sterling Craig on February 6, 1943, in Kansas City and they had been married 77 years upon his death in June of this year. They moved to Millersburg, Missouri where they raised three sons and a daughter. Dorothy worked for a brief time at Woodhaven, Christian College, but spent the majority of her life raising her children. She was a member of the Millersburg Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for years. She was also a member of the Millersburg Coffee Klatch group. Her favorite thing to do was to go shopping. When the children were young, she would take them shopping with her like little ducklings all in a row. Sterling and she would make a day of it and travel to visit a Wal-Mart in surrounding towns all over the state and split a meal. When she set her mind to something it was set. The family of six was living in a threeroom house and she decided she wanted a bigger house. Lenders were not loaning money in the rural areas at the time, but she went to every bank around and found someone to give them a loan to build a new house. When her children were growing up, she baked a cake a day (from scratch) for years. Dorothy also had a Christmas tradition of baking 15 dozen huge cinnamon rolls for her family every year. Dorothy was the grandma you read about in story books. She had white hair, was soft and a little bit round, and she had a sweet little giggle. She always had something sweet in the oven; but best of all, she always had time to stop what she was doing, sit down, and rock her grandbabies even when they were no longer babies. She was so proud of her children and grandchildren and will be truly missed. Left behind to miss her are her three sons: Roger (Florina) Craig of Millersburg, Jim (Susan) Craig of Millersburg, Jay (Sharon) Craig of Columbia, and daughter Marilyn Sommers of Columbia; grandchildren: Kevin (Lori) Craig, Robbie (Crystal) Craig, Tommy (Lisa) Craig, Joe (Loretta) Sheets, Paula Venezuela, Alicia Belmore, Jennifer Ziolko, Matthew (Sydney) Craig, Justin Craig, Shayla (Bill) Keller, Alayna (Jeremy) Dennis; many great and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sterling; parents, Roy and Sarah Baumgartner; brothers and sisters: Lawrence Baumgartner, Katherine Miller, Margie " Polly" Dudley. Friends and family will be received from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 1, 2020, at Parker-Millard Funeral Services with a funeral service to follow at the funeral home. Burial will be following at the Millersburg Cemetery. Memorials in her honor may be made to the Millersburg Community Cemetery, c/o Mary Smith, P.O. Box 771, Fulton, Missouri 65251. Arrangements are under the direction of Parker-Millard Funeral Service and Crematory; 12 East Ash Street, Columbia, Missouri, 65203; (573) 449-4153.
