William Woods' Smith falls short but makes school history

William Woods' Logan Smith wasn't able to make up ground during the last day of the NAIA national championships but tied David Houlding in 2015 for the top individual finish at a national championships in school history, securing the runner-up position.

Smith shot four strokes better than his day three score, but finished four strokes out from individual national champion Morningside College's Corey Matthey. The Owls placed 11th and posted a day four team score of 297 - their lowest team score since day two's 292 - and four-day score of 1,201. Dalton State had the championship-winning score of 35-over, 1,171.

Smith's day was full of pars, collecting 13 for the day, which eventually led to his final score of even-par. He had a streak of nine pars starting at the end of the back nine and carrying it into the front nine. On the front nine, Smith wasn't able to avoid two bogeys and a double-bogey on hole seven. He had two birdies also to conclude his day four score of two-over, 73.

Phillip Heller was able to jump 22 spots in the standings to 51st place, having the Owls' best individual score of the day at 2-under, 69, and besting his second- lowest score of the four rounds by four strokes. Heller had three bogeys on the back nine but also had two birdies and four pars. He concluded his day - after beginning the front nine with four pars, a birdie and a bogey - with three straight birdies.

Jakub Dymecki finished his national championships in a six-way tie for 22nd place, shooting a 5-over, 76. Dymecki had two bogeys within the first four holes to go along with two pars before wrapping up the back nine with four pars and a birdie. His front nine didn't start any better as he had two bogeys and a double bogey to start the stretch. He sunk three pars, two bogeys and a birdie to arrive at his highest one-day score since day one.

Maxime Faure finished in 86th place shooting an 8-over, 79. Faure began the back nine with a double- bogey and then had four pars, three bogeys and a birdie. His front nine consisted of five bogeys, three pars and a birdie.

Arron Patel stayed in 95th place, shooting his worst one-day score of 89. Patel had four pars but also had 10 bogeys and four double bogeys.
