Fulton baseball awarded three all-conference selections

On Friday, the Fulton baseball team had three members selected to the North Central Missouri Conference all-conference team for the first time.

Juniors Allen Walker and Grant Derenzy, and sophomore Dustin Hagens made the team after making the all-district team for the first time the day before.

Walker finished the season with a .367 average, good for second on the team. He also ranks second in OPS, RBI, runs and hits. Fulton head coach John Brinkmann said Walker led the team in average for most of the season and was a consistent threat to reach base.

Derenzy finished the season with a .318 average and was a presence in the middle of the Hornets order. He led the team in runs and had about as many walks as strikeouts and at least 20 hits. Brinkmann said he also was stellar in left field all season, making only one error.

"He hit in the third spot all but a few games and played a great left field all season long," Brinkmann said.

Hagens provided production at the plate and the mound. On one side of the ball, he finished with a .354 average, being one of three Hornets to have at least 20 hits and 10 RBI, along with Walker.

On the mound, Hagens led the Hornets, pitching more than 40 innings and making the most starts. He finished the season with a 2.91 ERA and 43 strikeouts.

"Hagens was one of the best dual-threat players in the district and pitched a great game against Wright City in our district game," Brinkmann said.

Fulton's season came to an end Saturday in its first-round district game against Wright City, when they lost 5-4 on a walk-off after tying the game in the top of the seventh. Hagens pitched five innings, allowed three runs (one earned) and struck out six, while collecting an RBI at the plate. Walker scored two runs.

The Hornets finished in fifth place in the conference with a 4-6 record and played to a 9-15 overall record this season.
