South Callaway’s athletes on its track and field teams will be competing today in the Class 2 sectionals at South Callaway High School.

The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will look to make an impact after combining for 10 top-4 finishes last Saturday in the Class 2 District 2 meet at New Haven.

Junior Brendon Mealy has found himself at or near the top of the leaderboard all season. Mealy had the best mark in the pole vault at the district meet and has the best Show-Me Conference marks in the pole vault and javelin.

Mealy has finished first five times this season. South Callaway co-head track and field coach Bill Frazee said he likes Mealy’s chances for his season to continue at the state track and field championships.

“If we were picking out someone who has the very best chance of making it through this weekend to next weekend, it would be Brendon,” Frazee said.

Lady Bulldog junior Raegan Brown had three of the top-4 finishes at districts — third in the 100-meter dash, second in the 200 and third in the long jump. She also has the top conference mark in the long jump. Brown qualified for sectionals in four events: long jump, 100, 200 and 4x100-meter relay.

Brown was able to translate this success in track and field events into the penthalon, where she holds top score in the district and in the conference set April 17 at the Licklider Invitational in Jefferson City.

“She is a very nice overall athlete as (her penthalon performance) would indicate,” Frazee said.

Brown has ascended to the top of the leaderboard in several events: the 100 twice, the 200 three times and the long jump three times.

Sophomore Lacey Mathews-Honarmand has had success in the pole vault, including her first-place finish at the district meet. She has the top mark in the conference. Mathews-Honarmand has finished in the top three in the pole vault several times, including a first-place finish in the team’s first meet of the year at the Russellville High School Open.

Frazee said it has been like a freshman year for Mathews-Honarmand after the COVID-19 pandemic canceled last season. He said it is like the sophomores are redshirt freshmen due to the circumstances, so it will be important for her to get some valuable experience.

“If she jumps what she has been jumping, which is around 9 feet, that will get her in to the state track meet and give her that experience we want her to have as a sophomore.”

Senior Paige Clubb is in the 200 with Brown in a competitive field.
