Fulton softball captures first at tournament in Camdenton

After three hard-fought games during the week, that saw Fulton lose two games by one run, the Lady Hornets ended their week on a high note with four wins Friday and Saturday and a tournament championship in Camdenton.

Fulton defeated Truman 9-2 and then Osage 13-1 on Friday before starting Saturday with a 2-1 win against Nixa and then a championship game 6-4 victory against Timberland.

Fulton and Truman were each carrying 8-6 records into game one at the tournament, but the Lady Hornets were also carrying their offense from the previous day's 10-9 loss to Mexico into the game. Fulton had 14 hits, led by senior Alex Trowbridge going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double and freshman Brilee Ash going 3-for-3 with three RBI and a double.

The bats would stay hot against 3-9 Osage as Trowbridge would add to her big offensive day, going 3-for-3 with three extra base hits and two RBI. She only was missing a single for the cycle as she had a double, triple and a home run. Junior Marah Walley had a good day at the plate and in the circle as she she went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run and six innings of one-run ball, allowing only two hits and striking out 12.

Offene would be harder to come by Saturday for the Lady Hornets, starting with 11-4 and 2.6 runs allowed per game team Nixa. Freshman Mylee Hawkins would up to the challenge in her seven innings, allowing only four hits and one unearned run while striking out eight. Sophomore Reagan Echelmeier and Ash each went 2-for-3, with Echelmeier scoring a run, and Trowbridge and senior Rylee Caswell would drive in the Fulton runs.

It was then onto the championship game and Class 5 Timberland, and Fulton's offense would do just enough to get the victory with its 10 hits and four doubles. Trowbridge would go 4-for-4, and 10-for-13 in the tournament, with two doubles and an RBI. Ash and senior Elaina Gray would add runs on doubles, and Caswell would go for 3-for-4 with two RBI. In the circle, Ash - 7-for-14 at the plate in the four games - would give the Lady Hornets the championship-winning pitching performance they needed in seven innings, allowing four runs (one earned) and six hits while striking out seven.

Fulton will take its 12-6 record into its 5 p.m. game today at Boonville (6-4).
