Lady Wildcats win once, lose close twice in Cairo

New Bloomfield had some good pitching but didn't always feature good defense Saturday as it lost two of three tournament games in Cairo.

The Lady Wildcats lost a wild 14-13 game against Community, had a convincing 15-0 win against North Callaway and lost in walk-off fashion for the second time of the day.

In game one, New Bloomfield (7-6) built a 11-4 lead through four innings against Community and then three Lady Wildcats led to a seven-run fifth by Community. The game was tied at 13 going into the bottom of the seventh, and the sixth New Bloomfield error and 13th error in the game allowed the winning run to score.

Senior Asya Nichols allowed 11 runs (six earned) through 3 innings. Senior Lelah Shikles went 2-for-4 with three RBI, and senior Brooke Talbot went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

New Bloomfield's second game against North Callaway was over in four innings as the Lady Wildcats scored in every inning and had 11 hits.

Sophomore Peityn Thomas shut out the Ladybirds through four innings, allowing three hits and one walk while striking out five. North Callaway junior Ellie Bedsworth allowed 15 runs (14 earned) and walked seven.

Junior Raegan Smart led the New Bloomfield offense by going 2-for-2 with four RBI, three runs scored and two doubles. Freshman Macie Abbott hit a home run as part of the Lady Wildcats' six-run second.

New Bloomfield's third game was against the team who would win third place at the tournament, Schuyler County. The Lady Rams would tie the game at 2 in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

Neither offense would score until the Lady Wildcats when the first three New Bloomfield hitters hit their way on, capped off by junior Avery Nichols' two-run double before being thrown out at third trying to stretch it into a triple. The Lady Rams would get a run back in the sixth with two outs after an outfield error by New Bloomfield set up the run-scoring hit.

Now in the eighth, Avery Nichols drove in her third run and then Asya Nichols tacked on another on a groundout.

Asya Nichols went back out for eighth, after pitching seven innings of two-run ball with seven strikeouts, and allowed a leadoff double and then a run-scoring single. The Lady Wildcats committed another outfield error to allow the runner to advance to second on the hit and then New Bloomfield recorded its fourth error and the game's fifth error when Schuyler County laid down a bunt.

Asya Nichols would finish with 7 innings with fout runs (two earned), eight strikeouts and seven hits. Avery Nichols went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double.

New Bloomfield will play another game away from home at 5 p.m. Tuesday when it travels to Fatima (6-2).
