High school girls' basketball: Southern Boone 41, Fulton 30

ASHLAND - The Lady Hornets were outscored by a combined 32-10 in the second and third quarters in falling to the Lady Eagles on Thursday night.

Fulton - which hadn't played since a 51-17 win at home over North Central Missouri Conference foe Hannibal on Dec. 8 - slipped to 1-3 on the season.

The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 9-0 lead after one quarter Thursday night, but Southern Boone outscored Fulton 13-3 in the second quarter and carried a slim 13-12 edge into halftime. The Lady Eagles then increased their advantage to 32-19 by outscoring the Lady Hornets 19-7 in the third quarter.

Senior guard Kayanna Gaines topped Fulton with a game-high 11 points and senior forward Carly Fisher had seven.

"Southern Boone had the ability to mix some stuff up (defensively) and keep us on our toes, and make us uncomfortable," Lady Hornets head coach Matt Wilbers said. "We just couldn't get any shots to fall in those middle two quarters."

Mariah Prince and Jo Scheer scored 10 points apiece to pace the Lady Eagles (5-2).

Fulton travels to Camdenton at 7 tonight.

"We're playing some really good competition, but we're showing that we're a different team than the past couple of years," Wilbers said. "We're moving in the right direction, we just need to get some consistency."
