Prep Baseball: Pitching leads Marshall past Fulton

Coy Smith quieted the Fulton bats Thursday, only allowing three balls to leave the infield in a 6-1 win for the Marshall Owls at Darrell Davis Field.

After Marshall scored a run in the second and two in the third, Lincoln Smith reached on an error and scored on an Ethan Burt single to left field.

In five innings, Smith struck out four, walked one and allowed an unearned run and two hits.

Ben Haug came in for relief and struck out all six batters he faced.

Grant Derenzy had the other hit for the Hornets, leading off with a single to center field in the first inning of the North Central Missouri Conference game.

Ryan Newman pitched four innings for the Hornets, allowing four runs on eight hits with a strikeout and two walks.

Paul Houf went three innings on the bump, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with two walks.

Marshall improves to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the NCMC with the win.

Fulton (2-6, 0-2) and Marshall will play each other again Tuesday in Marshall.
