High school softball: Eugene 3, New Bloomfield 1

EUGENE - The Lady Wildcats suffered their first Show-Me Conference loss of the season despite out-hitting the Lady Eagles 7-5 on Thursday night.

Eugene jumped in front with a run in the bottom of the first inning. New Bloomfield (8-3, 4-1 SMC) then tied the game at 1-all with a run in the top of the second when sophomore courtesy runner Brooklynn Smith scored on a passed ball with two outs.

The Lady Eagles went in front to stay by putting up two runs in the second.

Senior first baseman Sarah Abbott and sophomore left fielder Brinley Dysart were both 2-for-4 for the Lady Wildcats, who finished with all singles. Junior designated hitter Kamryn Herron was 1-for-3, while senior center fielder Makenna Branch and junior shortstop Jenna Nichols were each 1-for-4.

New Bloomfield freshman starter Peityn Thomas went the distance in suffering the loss, giving up three runs - two earned - while striking out three and walking three.

The Lady Wildcats play at Russellville at 10 a.m. Saturday.
