Fulton soccer team goes 2-0 at Boonville Tournament

BOONVILLE - Fulton junior forward Alban Dervishi scored a pair of goals as the Hornets soccer team blanked host Boonville 5-0 on Saturday at the Boonville Tournament.

Fulton went 2-0 in the round-robin tournament after rallying for a 5-4 victory Friday against Fatima. The Hornets extended their winning streak to five games Saturday in raising their season record to 7-1.

Fulton senior goalkeeper Logan Vanden Bosch turned away all 10 shots he faced in tallying his first shutout of the season Saturday.

Junior defender Dillon Jones put the Hornets on the scoreboard when he converted a penalty kick in the seventh minute of the first half. Dervishi then gave Fulton a 2-0 halftime edge with an unassisted goal in the 21st minute.

Dervishi followed with his second goal in the eighth minute of the second half, scoring off an assist from freshman forward Christian Mahoro. Senior midfielder Clement Mahoro made it 4-0 in the 19th minute with a goal assisted by Christian Mahoro.

Senior forward Mason Crane topped off the Hornets' scoring by logging a penalty kick in the 27th minute.

Fulton outshot Boonville by a decisive 32-14 margin, including 24-10 in shots on goal.

"I felt like the boys really responded well - coming out after playing the night before - with great energy," Fulton head coach Joel Henley said. "They played calm, composed, simple soccer that opened up all kinds of opportunities for them.

"We cleaned up things that we needed to from the night before. We still have things that we need to improve on, but we are moving in the right direction."

Dervishi delivered a hat trick Friday night in helping spark Fulton's comeback from a 4-2 deficit in the final 9 minutes against Fatima.

Dervishi scored off an assist from Christian Mahoro in the 31st minute of the second half. Dervishi then followed with his third goal - assisted by Jones - to tie the game at 4 in the 33rd minute.

Jones supplied the game-winner for the Hornets when he scored on his second free kick of the contest in the 37th minute.

Dervishi's first goal - also assisted by Christian Mahoro - came in the 35th minute of the first half to pull Fulton even at 1 at halftime.

Jones gave the Hornets the lead when he scored on a free kick in the third minute of the second half, but Fatima responded with three unanswered goals to build its 4-2 advantage.

Fulton outshot the Comets 22-8, including 14-7 in shots on goal.

"The guys really had to battle - they didn't play their best game and gave up some goals that shouldn't have happened, but they kept fighting and didn't quit," Henley said. "They showed how resilient they are once again and came back to win."

The Hornets travel to Kirksville for a North Central Missouri Conference clash at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
