High school softball: Lady Hornets fall to rival Mexico 6-1

The Fulton Lady Hornets softball team couldn't summon enough offense in falling to rival Mexico in a 6-1 North Central Missouri Conference loss Thursday night at the high school athletic complex.

Fulton - which has lost two of its last three - slipped to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the NCMC. The Lady Hornets also bowed to Mexico 7-6 in the War on the Battlefield Tournament on Sept. 4 in Jefferson City.

Mexico put up a run in the top of the first inning Thursday night and added three runs in the second to build a 4-0 advantage. Fulton tallied its lone run in the bottom of the second on senior center fielder Rylee Hagens' RBI sacrifice fly.

The Lady Bulldogs sealed their victory by scoring two runs in the fourth.

Senior first baseman Paige Clines went 4-for-4 as the Lady Hornets totalled eight hits, all singles. Senior shortstop Sydney Hedgpath was 2-for-3, junior catcher Rylee Baker finished 1-for-3 and junior third baseman Alex Trowbridge went 1-for-4.

Fulton senior starter Hayden Echlemeier went the distance in taking the loss. Echelmeier gave up six runs - four earned - on 12 hits, issued three walks and struck out one.

The Lady Hornets host Boonville at 5 p.m. Monday.
