High school softball: New Bloomfield 7, Linn 1

LINN - Freshman starter Peityn Thomas threw a one-hitter and New Bloomfield maintained its surge by toppling Linn in a Show-Me Conference matchup between Lady Wildcats on Tuesday night.

The victory was the seventh in a row for New Bloomfield, which improved to 7-1 and stayed unbeaten in the SMC at 3-0. New Bloomfield put up three runs in the top of the first inning, scored a run in the third and capped off the win with three more runs in the seventh.

Thomas struck out four and walked one in going the distance for the victory. She lost her shutout bid when Linn tallied an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior first baseman Sarah Abbott was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in as New Bloomfield totalled nine hits. Senior center fielder Makenna Branch finished 3-for-5 and scored a run, while junior shortstop Jenna Nichols went 2-for-5 with a run scored.

New Bloomfield prevailed in the junior varsity game 6-4.

New Bloomfield was coming off a decisive 10-0 win in five innings at New Haven on Monday night. The Lady Wildcats erupted for six runs in the top of the third and piled on four more in the fourth.

Junior designated hitter Brooke Talbot was 3-for-3 with a two-run home run in the second and finished with two RBI and a run scored as New Bloomfield accumulated 10 hits. Junior starter Asya Nichols went 1-for-3 with three RBI and scored two runs.

Asya Nichols tossed a one-hit shutout, struck out three and walked one to log the complete-game win.

The Lady Wildcats play Helias in Jefferson City at 5 p.m. Thursday.
