Girls Golf: New Bloomfield trio in good shape in Class 1

SMITHVILLE - New Bloomfield junior Sylvia Moss posted one of the low rounds Monday to begin the Class 1 girls golf state championships at Paradise Pointe Golf Course.

Moss is alone in seventh place out of 76 golfers following Monday's first round of a 23-over 95. She is nine shots behind the 18-hole leader, Lilli Stallings of Summit Christian Academy.

Moss, who was in the second group to tee off on hole No. 1, birdied the par-4 seventh hole and added five pars on the back nine in her round. She also recorded five bogeys.

New Bloomfield senior Kara Beckett is in a five-way tie for 17th place after carding a 31-over 103. She is tied with Greenwood's Tile Melody Wang, Cole Camp's Riley Bright, Sedalia Sacred Heart's Kelsey Hudson and New Covenant Academy's Maggie Moore.

Beckett, who also started her round on the first hole, joined Moss with a lone birdie on the seventh hole. Beckett added a pair of pars on the eighth and 11th holes and posted six bogeys in her round.

New Bloomfield freshman Dixie Moss is tied for 37th place in her first state tournament appearance after shooting a 38-over 110. She is tied with Mount Vernon's Kenadi Killingsworth.

Moss had one par in her round, shooting a 4 on hole No. 9. Unlike her teammates, Moss started her round on hole No. 10, saving her best score for her final hole of the day.

Moss also had six bogeys in her first round.

Sacred Heart's Caten Lucchesi is second in the individual standings with a 15-over 87. Centralia's ReaLee Smith and Lawson's Ellie Smith are tied for third with a 16-over 88.

Beckett and Dixie Moss are both scheduled to start today's second and final round in the 9:24 a.m. tee time.

Beckett will be paired with Moore and Lutheran: St. Charles' Abigail Boettler and start on hole No. 1, while Dixie Moss will play with Tarkio's Jamie Barnett and Southwest: Livingston's Makenna Campbell and start on hole No. 10.

Sylvia Moss will tee off on hole No. 1 at 10 a.m. with Villa Duchesne's Kathryn Fesler and Duchesne's Emily Norviel.

The top 15 individuals and ties will receive all-state honors.

Sacred Heart leads in the team standings with a 404, while Brookfield is second with a 469. They are the only two schools with enough golfers to post team scores in Class 1.
