High school softball: California 6, New Bloomfield 5

CALIFORNIA - The Lady Pintos rallied for two runs apiece in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to upend the Lady Wildcats in Monday night's regular-season finale.

New Bloomfield (12-7) broke a 2-all tie by scoring three runs in the top of the third and protected its lead until California's late comeback. The Lady Wildcats managed only six hits and committed three errors.

New Bloomfield junior starter Asya Nichols was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the third, a double and a run scored. Sophomore left fielder Brinley Dysart finished 1-for-3 with a two-run homer in the first and scored two runs.

Senior center fielder Makenna Branch went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Lady Wildcats.

Nichols was tagged with the complete-game loss, surrendering six runs - five earned - on 10 hits. She struck out two and walked one.

New Bloomfield is the third seed in the Class 2, District 3 Tournament at South Callaway and faces No. 6 North Callaway (7-10) in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. today. The Lady Wildcats rolled to an 11-1 victory over the Ladybirds on Sept. 5 at New Bloomfield.

In the first District 3 quarterfinal at 3 p.m. today, No. 7 seed South Callaway (2-17) plays No. 2 Russellville (21-3).
