High school girls' basketball: New Bloomfield 59, Calvary Lutheran 27

NEW BLOOMFIELD - Junior guard Asya Nichols connected for a game-high 17 points to steer the Lady Wildcats to their first win of the season over the Lady Lions on Tuesday night.

Senior guard Aislin Jennings also pulled down 10 rebounds for New Bloomfield (1-1), which owned a 25-15 advantage at halftime. The Lady Wildcats turned the game into a rout by outscoring Calvary Lutheran 34-12 in the second half.

"We had a slow start to the game - I thought Calvary Lutheran came out and outworked us in the first half," New Bloomfield head coach Patrick Center said. "I challenged the girls at halftime to pick up their energy and to compete harder.

"I thought they responded very well in the third quarter. We got our press going and were able to get some turnovers and some easy baskets."

Sydney Morris guided the Lady Lions with 14 points.

The Lady Wildcats are the fifth seed at the Tipton Tournament next week. New Bloomfield squares off against No. 4 seed Capital City in the first round at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
