Jefferson City's Wyatt Fischer slides into third base during the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against Fulton at Vivion Field.

It wasn't a great start for the Jefferson City JV group.

The first ground ball of the game was bounced past the first baseman on the throw and then flew into the outfield on the next throw. Fulton one run, Jefferson City two errors.

It was much better after that.

The Jays didn't commit another error until the sixth inning and made up for that one with a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to secure a 9-4 victory in 5 innings against the Hornets on Tuesday night at Vivion Field.

"You can make a mistake but you can't follow it up by another mistake," Jays coach Kyle Lasley said. "That's what they did there but the rest of the game was pretty clean."

After an 11-0 win in 4 innings in Game 1, the majority of the Jays' lineup for Game 2 consisted of JV players, including some soon-to-be freshmen.

Will Berendzen, the Jays' usual starting catcher, pitched 3 innings of one-hit baseball in relief and the hot bats of Ryan Tadsen and Isaac Enloe turned a 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 lead in the fifth inning.

Enloe capped off a 3-for-3 night by smashing a bases-clearing double to deep center field.

Tadsen added an RBI single up the middle and later scored on an error for the final run of the game. He went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Enloe had two singles and a double with four RBI.

"He's kind of the leader of that JV group," Lasley said. " He just kind of has that toughness to him to where he can kind of jump on somebody if they need to be jumped on but also kind of pull somebody aside and say, 'Hey man, keep your head up and move on.' He's a good kid and he had a really good game tonight."

Wyatt Fischer and Grant Straub led the Jays' offensive attack in Game 1.

Fischer crushed a double off the fence in center field to score a pair as part of an eight-run second inning. He went 2-for-3 with those two RBI.

Straub drove in two runs in the fourth with a grounder to right field for a single to make it 11-0.

Tanner Schmitz got the win on the mound, keeping Fulton out of the hit column with nine strikeouts and three walks in four innings.

Jacob Duke struck out the side in the fifth.

Schmitz was getting deep into counts, so Lasley walked to the mound in the fourth to tell him to work his fastball more.

The next batter struck out looking at a fastball on the inside corner and Schmitz got the next batter out swinging to strike out the side.

"I just told him not to fall in love with his curveball," Lasley said. "He didn't have problems with his fastball and those guys were kind of behind it."

The Jays will conclude play in the summer league Thursday against Rock Bridge. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Vivion Field. There will be a Senior Night ceremony between games.
