High school girls' basketball: Hermann 59, New Bloomfield 21

MOKANE - The seventh-seeded Lady Wildcats were humbled by the No. 2 Lady Bearcats in suffering their third straight loss in first-round play at the South Callaway Invitational Tournament on Monday night.

New Bloomfield (5-7) found itself down 20-6 after one quarter and trailed 38-14 at halftime. Hermann then outscored the Lady Wildcats 15-6 in the third quarter to widen its decisive lead to 53-20.

Junior guard Makenna Branch, freshman guard Mikah Edwards, sophomore guard Jenna Nichols and senior center Ella Stevens each had four points for New Bloomfield.

"We had trouble scoring and couldn't defend their size," Lady Wildcats head coach Brett Craighead said.

Gracie Winkelmann supplied a game-high 19 points to direct three players in double figures for the Lady Bearcats. Brianna Thomas and Grace Godat chipped in with 10 points apiece.

New Bloomfield faces No. 6 seed New Haven in the consolation semifinals at 7:30 tonight in the middle school gym. New Haven bowed to No. 3 seed Montgomery County 44-32 in Monday night's first round.
