High school wrestling: Hornets, T-Birds set to open state wrestling today

The Fulton Hornets and North Callaway Thunderbirds wrestling teams will be represented, respectively, by five qualifiers in Class 2 and two in Class 1 when the 90th MSHSAA championships start this morning at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

Fulton's qualifiers include sophomore Owen Uhls at 113 pounds, junior Sam Hrabovsky at 132, senior Jackson Caswell at 120, sophomore Josh Dunmire at 285 and junior Eston Dews at 138.

North Callaway's qualifiers are senior Jadon Henry at 138 and freshman Connor Green at 106.

First-round matches begin at 9 a.m., followed immediately by first-round wrestlebacks.

Fulton will also have three qualifiers - sophomore Rylee Baker at 110, junior Paige Clines at 187 and freshman Ryli Arney at 235 - competing in the Class 1 girls' state championships this afternoon.

First-round matches get underway at 2 p.m., followed immediately by first-round wrestlebacks.

Here is a look at Fulton's and North Callaway's state qualifiers:

FULTON

CLASS 2

OWEN UHLS, sophomore, 113 pounds (37-3)

First-round opponent: Pleasant Hill freshman Brayden Bass (16-12).

Making it to Mizzou: Uhls won a District 2 title by pinning St. Francis Borgia's Joseph Lause in 1 minute, 9 seconds last Saturday in Mexico.

That's a fact: A two-time state qualifier, Uhls will be pursuing a second consecutive state championship after winning the state title at 106 last year.

Quotable: "Owen has been solid all year long," Hornets head coach Ryan Morts said. "He continues to strive to become a better wrestler and pushes his partners in the wrestling room every day.

"He is a very focused young man and knows what he needs to do to return to the state finals and be on top of the podium."

SAM HRABOVSKY, junior, 132 (30-2)

First-round opponent: Oak Grove junior Chayton Kellum (19-24).

Making it to Mizzou: Hrabovsky captured the District 2 championship with a 9-1 major decision over Blair Oaks' Caleb Meeks.

That's a fact: Hrabovsky - a three-time state qualifier - secured a state championship at 113 with a perfect 42-0 record as a freshman in 2018. He followed that up with a second-place finish at 120 last year after suffering the first loss of his high school career in an agonizing 4-3 decision to Monett's Karter Brink for the state title.

Like Hrabovsky, Brink (38-6) - now a senior - has also made the move up to 132 this year and the pair are on the same side of the state bracket. They could be headed toward a semifinal showdown Friday night.

Quotable: "Sam is ready to wrestle," Morts said. "He is going to have a very tough bracket this year. It is full of state medalists and the returning state champion (Brink) from Monett.

"Sam is focused and we have talked about how he needs to wrestle Brink from Monett. No doubt in my mind, Sam will wrestle well this weekend."

JACKSON CASWELL, senior, 120 (44-1)

First-round opponent: Odessa senior Zach Landsberg (18-18).

Making it to Mizzou: Caswell locked up the District 2 title with a 5-1 decision over Mexico's Ricardo Juarez.

That's a fact: Caswell will close out his high school career by making his fourth trip to the state championships and he appears to be in prime position to contend for a state title. He previously medalled with respective third-place finishes at 106 in 2018 and 113 last year.

Quotable: "Jackson is the lone senior this year and has led the team," Morts said. "He has wrestled better than ever this year - he has had some very good competition and has excelled.

"He is very focused on what he has to do this year at state."

JOSH DUNMIRE, sophomore, 285 (32-14)

First-round opponent: Central (Park Hills) junior Michael Weinhold (14-12).

Making it to Mizzou: Dunmire collected the District 2 championship with a pin of Blair Oaks' Shane Gilmore in 5:15.

That's a fact: Dunmire will be making his first appearance at the state championships.

Quotable: "Before the district tournament, (assistant coach) Clay (Caswell) reviewed the 220 and heavyweight bracket," Morts said. "It looked like the best chance to get Josh into the state tournament was going to be the heavyweight bracket - 220 was filled with a couple of kids who had beat him during the year and a state champion.

"So Josh moved up to heavyweight and he had a great tournament and won the district. This will give him some confidence going into the state tournament."

ESTON DEWS, junior, 138 (22-16)

First-round opponent: Oak Grove sophomore Carson Smith (24-13).

Making it to Mizzou: Dews finished second in District 2 after dropping a 9-5 decision to Moberly's Zach Lewis in the title match.

That's a fact: Dews will be returning to the state championships for the second year in a row after qualifying at 126 in 2019.

Quotable: "Eston has peaked at the end of this season," Morts said. "He had a great district tournament - he beat the kid from Kirksville (Logan Blickhan in the semifinals) that he lost to a few weeks ago, and he had a great match against the Moberly kid in the finals.

"I feel if he continues to wrestle like this, he will receive a medal for his hard work this weekend."

RYLEE BAKER, sophomore, 110 (29-6)

First-round opponent: Lafayette (St. Joseph) sophomore Isa-Bella Mendoza (30-10).

Making it to Mizzou: Baker took second in District 1 after being pinned by Washington's Mia Reed in :58 in the championship match Feb. 8 in Wentzville.

That's a fact: A two-time state qualifier, Baker advanced at 103 last year.

Quotable: "Rylee is a competitor," Morts said. "She has had another great season. It was impressive to see her improvement throughout the year - she has worked very hard all year and has wrestled some good competition.

"I think she is ready and I feel she can medal this year."

PAIGE CLINES, junior, 187 (25-9)

First-round opponent: Marshfield junior Kylie Martin (27-8).

Making it to Mizzou: Clines came in third in District 1 by logging a pin over Orchard Farm's Lilly Bader in 1:22.

That's a fact: Clines will also be coming back to the state championships for a second consecutive year after qualifying at 167 in 2019.

Quotable: "Paige has really turned it on the second part of the season," Morts said. "I was very impressed when I watched her wrestle at the Branson Tournament this year. I think things are clicking for her and everything is coming together.

"She is peaking at the right time as well. I also think if she stays focused, she can medal this year."

RYLI ARNEY, freshman, 235 (28-8)

First-round opponent: Tipton junior Kyla Cornine (25-3).

Making it to Mizzou: Arney placed third in District 1 by pinning Holt's Sydni Scott in :52.

That's a fact: Arney will be making her first appearance at the state championships.

Quotable: "Ryli is a competitor - she has improved throughout the year and continues to surprise us," Morts said. "Her matches are exciting - she is very nimble and strong. More times than not, she comes out on top during a scramble and is in good position, and beats the other girl.

"This is her first trip to state, but she rises to the level of her competition."

NORTH CALLAWAY

CLASS 1

JADON HENRY, senior, 138 (35-2)

First-round opponent: Central (New Madrid County) sophomore Troquan Mays (23-12).

Making it to Mizzou: Henry secured a District 3 title by scoring a pin of Centralia's Kyden Wilkerson in 2:48 last Saturday in Marceline.

That's a fact: Henry will be capping off his high school career as a four-time state qualifier and is a strong contender for a state championship. He became North Callaway's first-ever state medalist by finishing third at 132 in 2018.

Henry - battling a joint sprain between his sternum and clavicle - reached the state quarterfinals at 138 last year, but was eliminated after being forced to medical forfeit his second-round wrestleback match.

Quotable: "Jadon has had a great season so far - he has stepped up his senior year and been the leader that we needed on the team," Thunderbirds head coach Jake Vitale said. "He sets the bar high for his teammates and they work hard to reach it.

"Jadon has a pretty good draw for state - he has the potential to finish his career off as a state champion. His biggest focus just needs to be to go out and have fun. When he wrestles like he can, there are very few guys in the state who can keep up with him."

CONNOR GREEN, freshman, 106 (28-9)

First-round opponent: South Harrison sophomore Mason Hamilton (30-10).

Making it to Mizzou: Green finished fourth in District 3 after bowing in a 3-2 decision to Lexington's Josh Payne in the third-place match.

That's a fact: Green will be making his first trip to the state championships.

Quotable: "Connor has had a great season for his freshman campaign - until this year, he had not made it to state for the youth wrestling team," Vitale said. "Not only did Connor make it this year, but he earned a spot coming out of the toughest district. He was able to beat out two of the top six ranked wrestlers to make it to state.

"Connor has positioned himself in the bracket, so that earning a state medal as a freshman is very possible. A lot like Jadon, Connor needs to stay composed and keep having fun with the sport. When he is wrestling his best, I don't see many guys in his bracket that he can't beat."
