High school football: Bulldogs race past Indians

VANDALIA - The South Callaway Bulldogs' offense has discovered a dynamic gear.

South Callaway junior running back Hayden Vaught was a minimalist inflicting maximum damage, rushing for 189 yards and three touchdowns on just four carries as the Bulldogs roughed up Van-Far/Community in a 51-0 EMO blitz Friday night.

Vaught also had a touchdown catch as South Callaway put up more than 500 yards of total offense and 49-plus points for the second straight week. The Bulldogs logged back-to-back victories for the first time this season and have won three of their last four, improving to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the Eastern Missouri Conference.

"It was another big-time game from Hayden," South Callaway head coach Zack Hess said. "I was so impressed with our offense and our offensive line did an awesome job.

"It was perfect Bulldog football weather and our kids played hard."

Vaught scored on long runs of 27, 65 and 66 yards, and his other carry in the game went for 31 yards. He also caught a 67-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Cole Shoemaker.

Senior running back Devin Borghardt supplied 82 yards rushing and scored on runs of 12 and 16 yards. The Bulldogs amassed 527 yards of total offense, including 448 yards rushing.

Senior running back Noah Reece contributed a 47-yard touchdown run for South Callaway and sophomore backup quarterback Sam Buckner scored on a 2-yard run.

Van-Far/Community has lost five in a row in dropping to 1-6 on the season and 0-5 in the EMO. The Bulldogs' defense produced four takeaways - including two interceptions by sophomore linebacker Brendon Mealy - in holding the Indians to 151 yards of total offense.

"Defensively, we talked all week about creating havoc and our kids responded with 11 tackles for a loss," Hess said.

South Callaway comes home this week to face Wright City in an EMO matchup. The Wildcats (5-2, 4-1) - who are tied for first place in the conference with North Callaway and Montgomery County - blanked Bowling Green at home in a 6-0 EMO win Friday night.
