Boys' basketball: MSD 45, KSD 35

OLATHE, Kan. - Junior center Mikal Meriwether tallied a game-high 17 points and the Eagles outscored the Jackrabbits by a combined 22-10 in the second and third quarters of Saturday night's win.

The Kansas School for the Deaf was in front 12-11 after one quarter, but the Missouri School for the Deaf (5-2) outscored the Jackrabbits 12-6 in the second quarter and owned a 23-18 lead at halftime. The Eagles then outscored KSD 10-4 in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 33-22.

Meriwether also had eight rebounds and four assists, while sophomore forward Conner Luper contributed 10 points for MSD.

Quventis Reese topped the Jackrabbits with 11 points.

Earlier Saturday, the Eagles bowed to the Illinois School for the Deaf 53-40. MSD trailed the Tigers 31-22 at halftime and 42-29 entering the fourth quarter.

Meriwether posted a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds to guide the Eagles. Sophomore guard Hezeki Smoot chipped in with 10.

Shannon McNeal led Illinois with a game-high 19 points.

Last Friday at KSD, MSD manhandled the Iowa School for the Deaf 61-29. The Eagles bolted to a 21-6 advantage over the Bobcats after one quarter and carried a 33-18 lead into halftime.

Meriwether directed MSD with a game-high 22 points and sophomore guard Jayden Riordan supplied 21.

Ethan Bosch paced Iowa with 14 points.

The Eagles host Wellsville at 6 p.m. Thursday.
