High school girls' basketball: Centralia 64, North Callaway 34

KINGDOM CITY - The Ladybirds were outscored by the Lady Panthers by a combined 37-11 in the second and fourth quarters in dropping their season opener Tuesday night.

The game was tied at 12-all after one quarter, but Centralia outscored North Callaway 22-8 in the second quarter to go in front 34-20 at halftime. The Ladybirds trailed 49-31 after three quarters and the Lady Panthers turned the game into a runaway by outscoring North Callaway 15-3 over the final 8 minutes.

Sophomore guard Ryelle Schmauch provided 14 points as the only player to reach double figures for the Ladybirds. Senior guard Daelyn Schmauch had seven rebounds and four steals.

"We played really well in the first quarter, but Centralia showed its experience with four of its starters back and we're such a young team," North Callaway head coach Morgan Beamer said. "We found out that we have to work on a lot of things."

Mary Kate Bennett countered with a game-high 24 points to guide the Lady Panthers.

The Ladybirds have drawn the seventh seed for next week's 64th-annual Centralia Invitational Tournament. North Callaway meets No. 2 Salisbury in first-round play at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
