High school boys' basketball: Van-Far 53, South Callaway 52

VANDALIA - The Indians spoiled the Bulldogs' season opener by hitting two decisive free throws with 22 seconds to play Tuesday night.

South Callaway had a final opportunity to emerge with a dramatic victory, but senior guard Tyler Lepper's 3-point attempt narrowly missed the mark as time expired.

The Bulldogs trailed 13-10 after one quarter and 26-22 at halftime. South Callaway then battled back from a 43-35 deficit going into the fourth quarter.

Lepper knocked down five 3s to spark the Bulldogs with 21 points. Sophomore guards Trace Helsel and Trynnen Gray chipped in with nine points apiece.

"First and foremost, I was super-proud of the effort and grit our team showed," South Callaway head coach Seth Thomas said. "Van-Far is a good team and tough to play at home. I couldn't be more proud of them.

"I got great contributions up and down the lineup, and had guys step up and make some huge plays."

The Bulldogs play their home opener against Wright City at 6 p.m. Friday.
