Westminster men's basketball to tip off 2021-22 season on Nov. 7

Historic Gym will see Westminster men's basketball for the first time this season on Nov. 7 in a game against Grinnell College.

The Blue Jays will have a full slate of games on their schedule this season after a COVID-shortened season that didn't see them take the court until February of this year.

Westminster will tip off that Grinnell game at 7 p.m. and then won't return home until January because of three nonconference tournaments the Blue Jays will participate in close together. From Nov. 12-28, Westminster will play in the ARC/SLIAC Classic, the Webster Classic and the Rhodes Thanksgiving Tournament. The first two take place in St. Louis, and the third one will be at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., where the Blue Jays will face the host Rhodes in a 2 p.m. Nov. 27 game.

Head coach Matt Mitchell, entering his 24th year, said these nonconference games should prepare the Blue Jays for their conference schedule that begins at 3 p.m. Jan. 5 against Eureka and then proceeds with a 5 p.m. Jan. 8 game against Principia, when Westminster returns home.

"This is a good schedule that will test us and most importantly get us ready for the conference," Mitchell said. "We have some good returning pieces as we have four starters and numerous bench players that saw good time returning."

The schedule breaks down into 25 games total, with 12 on the road, eight at home and five on neutral courts. Some notable matchups include a 7 p.m. New Year's Eve game at Washington University in St. Louis and a 7:30 p.m. Feb. 16 home game against defending conference champion Blackburn College, which will also function as Westminster's Senior Day.
