Owls hit first serves of season, women's pair wins

William Woods tennis had solid start to its season Sunday in the William Woods Invite against a couple of NCAA Division II teams in Southwest Baptist and Rockhurst.

The Owls had the women's double champions in Ana Zavala and Hanna Lindeboom and a couple of men in the singles finals in Robert Schorr and Nathan Cooke.

Zavala and Lindeboom defeated a Southwest Baptist pair 6-3, a William Woods pairing in Allison Kowalke and Alessa Cremer 6-2 and Rockhurst 6-3 in the finals.

Schorr beat his Rockhurst opponent 6-3, 4-6, 10-3; beat William Woods teammate Marcos Salamanca de Arcos 6-2, 6-2; and then lost to Southwest Baptist 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 in the finals. Cooke's road had him go through Southwest Baptist 6-4, 6-2; William Woods' Patrick Bernius 6-2, 6-2; before losing to another Southwest Baptist opponent 6-3, 6-1.

Zavala, Rukshika Wijesooriya, Marta Calvo Larraz and Hannah Meyer all fell in the semifinals in women's singles while with Salamanca de Arco, Bernius, Vaclav Schneider, Vitek Subert and Jaeden Mukkaladyil lost in the men's singles semifinals.

William Woods tennis will play in the ITA Regional Tournament Sept. 23-25 in Bourbonnais, Ill. at Olivet Nazarene University.
