Men's Soccer: Blue Jays blink first in 1-0 loss to Illinois College

Westminster men's soccer had the first shot on goal Saturday in its game against Illinois College, but the Blueboys had the only one score in the Blue Jays' 1-0 loss.

Each team split duties between two goalkeepers across both halves, and it was Westminster's Toby Hughes that would allow an Illinois College goal in the 56th minute of the second half.

Connor Benefield started the game for Westminster and Miles Atkins did the same for Illinois College. Benefield stopped three while Atkins had to stop only one. Hughes and the Blueboys' Caleb Fink would each have three chances in the second.

Five Blue Jays had a shot on goal, led by Joe Wilder's two. Wilder had a scoring chance 38 seconds into the game and in the 75th minute. The second chance was part of the four shots on goal Westminster had in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Shots were about even at 12-10 Illinois College, but Westminster almost doubled the Blueboys in fouls at 22-13.

The Blue Jays will play in a crosstown matchup with NAIA William Woods (0-4) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Blue Jay Stadium.
