Westminster continues the pressure in sweep against Blackburn

Westminster didn't give much room for Principia to breath in the Blue Jays' previous match when they swept the Panthers, and the same was true Thursday night at home against Blackburn.

For the second straight match, Westminster swept its opponent (25-20, 25-11, 25-13) while compiling at least 10 service aces and preventing the other team from having even one.

There was some resistance from Blackburn early in the first set as the score was tied 6-6 but then Westminster would go on 7-2 run to make it 13-8. Eryka Wanyonyi would record two kills in that run along with Emma Geier and Claire Whitehouse taking control of the set before closing it out.

The Blue Jays wouldn't encounter much trouble in the second set with a 12-2 run, thanks to Wanyonyi and Whitehouse kills, three service aces and many Blackburn errors. Wanyonyi and Haley Menke would take control with some more kills in the third set when Westminster was only leading 14-10. Menke would have three kills in the 11-3 run the Blue Jays would go to close the set, with a Menke kill being the final blow.

Wanyonyi would lead Westminster with 12 kills and five service aces. She along with three other Blue Jays to have hitting percentages more than .300, with Geier and Whitehouse owning .750 and .615 marks. Gretchen Durbala would have 37 assists.

Westminster has three matches scheduled in two days with one Oct. 1 at Spalding and two today against Principia and Fontbonne at 1 and 3 p.m. as part of the Fontbonne Tri-Match event in St. Louis.
