Women's Track and Field: William Woods wins American Midwest Conference title

ST. LOUIS - The William Woods Owls turned in 12 all-conference performances on its way to winning the American Midwest Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Katie French, who was awarded as the Outstanding Field Athlete of the Year, won two events in the two-day meet that concluded Saturday at Missouri Baptist.

French won the discus by nearly four meters with a throw of 138 feet, 2 inches.

In the shot put, William Woods teammates French, Jeanette Woehrle and Ananiah Talton claimed the three all-conference spots.

French's best mark was 45-1.75 to win ahead of Woehrle's throw of 40-11.75 and Talton's toss of 39-5.25.

Woehrle also earned third-team all-conference honors in the discus with a throw of 123-5.

Naomi Kerkula, Ellie Dimond and Alicia Engelbrecht were winners for the Owls.

Kerkula and teammate Kristan Wilson took the top two spots in the 400-meter dash with times of 1:03.63 and 1:03.82, respectively.

Dimond took the top spot in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:12.34, while Wilson was third in 1:17.64.

In the 5,000-meter run, Engelbrecht clocked in at 18:51.89 for the victory.

William Woods added a win in the 4x100-meter relay, as Wilson, Kerkula, Jessica Clausner and Trinity Thomas ran the race in 51.34 seconds.

Other third-place finishers for William Woods were Nia Hawkins (long jump, 15-11) and Kerkula (200-meter dash, 27.38 seconds).

Columbia College finished 44 points behind William Woods with 178 points. Missouri Baptist took third with 137 points.

William Woods will compete May 26-28 in the NAIA National Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala.
