Smith, Zrodowska compete at tournaments following last season's successes

A pair of William Woods golfers who found success this spring competed in summer tournaments earlier this month.

Logan Smith was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 114th Missouri Amateur Championship from June 22 to Sunday and Maria Zrodowska won the 15th Dr. Irena Eris Ladies' Golf Cup from June 14-15 in her home country of Poland.

Following his second-place finish at the NAIA national championships and NAIA All-America first team selection, Smith made it past the two qualifying rounds June 22-23, sinking 10 birdies and 16 pars. He had two results that were a double-bogey or worse, but those only occurred in the first two days.

Smith moved on to the round of 64 that started Thursday, which also had match play, defeating Presten Richardson, of Miller, and then eliminated Brian Haskell, of St. Joseph, on Friday in the round of 32. Smith had one eagle, eight birdies and only three bogeys through the two rounds.

That same day in the round of 16, Smith defeated Brett Hulsey, of Sullivan, before ultimately being eliminated Saturday in the quarterfinals by the eventual champion, Curtis Brokenbrow, of St. Louis. Smith finished his last two rounds with an eagle, four birdies, 21 pars and six bogeys, including five in the match with Brokenbrow.

The Polish contest featured many female amateur players and members of the Polish national team, including Zrodowska. In her previous season at William Woods, Zrodowska earned her second NAIA All-American selection, appearing on the third team, and made her second appearance at the NAIA national championships, finishing in an tie for 29th this time after she tied for fifth in her first trip during freshman year. She also became the all-time wins leader in program history.

Zrodowska was in contention for first place on the final day with her national team teammate, Dominika Gradecka, besting Gradecka by two strokes to win the event. During her two rounds, Zrodowska shot a 151 - 77 on Day 1 and 74 on Day 2.
