Men's soccer: Spalding edges Westminster 2-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Spalding scored two goals early in the first half and held off Westminister in the Blue Jays' regular season finale Saturday, winning 2-1.

The Eagles scored in the 23rd minute on a counter-attack, as defender Abdoulaye Pam netted his fifth goal of the season, then Asher Benge doubled the lead three minutes later.

Andrew Sprengel scored off a free kick, his first goal of the season, in the 35th minute, and both teams managed three shots each in the scoreless second half.

Goalkeeper Chase Vogt faced five shots and made three saves for Westminister.

The Blue Jays finish the regular season 6-4-1, 5-4-1 in SLIAC play, and fourth in the conference standings behind Webster, Spalding and Iowa Wesleyan.

Westminister opens SLIAC tournament play Tuesday, hosting No. 5 seed Blackburn College.
